Computer-aided digital planning for spinal surgeries is increasingly more important and is becoming more widely used in the daily routine of neurosurgeons. Furthermore, in recent years, spine surgery is orienting more towards the requirements of orthopedic and trauma surgery (for example, arthroplasty and trauma registries). In 2015, mediCAD Hectec GmbH introduced its software module mediCAD preoperative planning with performance features such as sagittal balance calculation, automatic placement of screws and cages, easy planning of spinal fusion or the insertion of rods. Planning can be done in both two- and three-dimensions, either by viewing an overall model in 3D or by the representation of the individual 2D layers in the axial, sagittal or coronal plane.
