SEH Delivers Network Support for GDI Printers and Non-network-enabled MFPs
New Software Release 10.2.6 for SEH “PS“ Print Servers With Many Enhanced Functionalities Now Available
(firmenpresse) - Bielefeld, August 9, 2007. – The new software release 10.2.6 for SEH “PS“ print servers features UTN (USB-to-Network) for accessing non-network-enabled USB output devices via the network. UTN makes the complete functional range of GDI printers and non-network-enabled multifunctional peripherals (MFP) available to the users. The new release also enhances the “PS” print servers’ security package, adding the authentication methods PEAP, EAP-FAST, and EAP-TTLS as well as the protocol FTPS. As of now, all SEH “PS” print servers will come loaded with version 10.2.6. For existing installations of models PS01a, PS03a, PS23a, PS34a, PS34a-PoE, PS54a-G, PS104, PS105, and PS112 the new version is available as a free download from the SEH website (www.seh.de).
The new USB to Network (UTN) feature by SEH enables users to install GDI printers – i.e. USB printers with the Windows interface GDI (Graphic Device Interface) – and non-network-enabled MFPs on their PC and access them just like network printers. Until now such devices could only be deployed as single work station printers because they are not equipped with a processor, have very little memory at their disposal and rely on the resources of a Windows PC for processing print data. Also, these devices communicate exclusively via proprietary printer languages. For these reasons they could not be shared in a network. Now, using the USB print servers PS03a, PS23a, PS34a, PS34a-PoE, and PS54a-G with UTN makes it possible to access such output devices via a network independent of make and model.
Mobile Printing and Work Group Printing with UTN
With UTN GDI printers and non-network-enabled MFPs and copiers can be used in various ways such as work group and mobile printing, scan to network, and faxing via the network. In the case of MFPs the entire functional range, including copying, printing, scanning, and faxing, becomes available.
Secure Authentication According to IEEE 802.1x
The new software release 10.2.6 offers a broader range of authentication methods based on the IEEE standard 802.1x. These now include PEAP (Protected EAP), EAP-FAST (EAP-Flexible Authentication via Secure TLS), EAP-TTLS (EAP-Tunnelled TLS), Cisco LEAP, EAP-MD5, and EAP-TLS.
Protecting the Print Server Configuration with FTPS
10.2.6 also features support of FTPS (File Transport Protocol over SSL). With this protocol, users can safely protect the print server configuration because passwords will no longer be transmitted in clear text. FTPS is used to read the print server parameters (configuration information), to configure the print server (setting parameters, including the password), to quickly and simply install software and firmware updates, to transfer print data, and to read the status and service information of the print server.
In addition, the SNTP function of the „PS“ print servers is enhanced to include all time zones. This ensures that all time-critical services provide for seamless network printing management.
