Combustion engines vs. electromobility – where will the journey go?

(firmenpresse) - A topic that every car driver is engaged in, but of course the logistics sector, too. How will it go on with the contemplated driving ban on Diesel vehicles in cities? And will combustion engines really be a thing of the past in the year 2030?
We sum up the current situation as well as future visions in an overview:

Combustion engine vs. electric motor

One crucial characteristic is that electric motors don’t need a conventional transmission in contrast to a combustion engine. It already reaches its maximum engine torque shortly after switching it on. Additionally an electric motor is able to accelerate easily even at a low speed level. Thus compact cars reach peak levels that usually only a Porsche 911 can.

When it comes to driving in urban regions the electric motor has a further unbeatable advantage: it is nearly noiseless. That has, by the way, a high priority for transport logistics, too. More and more trucks enter the cities. The mail-order business is booming – clothing, home appliances, toys, electronics but also food are increasingly ordered via Internet. Consequently all these goods have to be delivered to the door. Therefor noise level in cities is a big topic. As a result quiet electric motors score in this field.

To this day the big disadvantage of electric driven vehicles is the low energy density of batteries. The cruising range is considerably lower than that of a fuel tank filled with gasoline or Diesel. An additional disadvantage is that batteries have a comparably high weight. Altogether electromobility lacks in flexibility for long distances. Thus short charging times for batteries, a comprehensive development of charging stations and a considerably longer durability are indispensable for its success. Manufacturers of cars and trucks are working on solutions urgently.

What does politics say? What is planned?

For a long time already the Green Party has been demanding a ban on Diesel vehicles in cities (currently Munich) and is already at the point that combustion engines shouldn’t be road-licensed from 2030. Consumers, just like logistics companies, are unsettled: What will turn up? And when will it turn up? There are a lot of discussions at the moment – however without tangible results.

What are the technical developments at the moment?

The company ZF Friedrichshafen AG pushes the electrification by a broad product and service portfolio, especially the electrification of utility vehicles. In this connection they put their focus on electric propulsion for city vehicles and hybrid applications for long-distance traffic.
The first all-electric Mercedes B 250e already reaches a distance of 230 km and, according to test operators, is uncompromising when it comes to driving pleasure. The energy is delivered by a high-performance lithium-ion battery which is placed space-saving and securely in the vehicle’s undercarriage.
The truck manufacturer MAN got down to business, too, and developed the first E-truck. It is supposed to be approved for road traffic already in November 2017.

Electric motors for an emission-free future

The future of mobility will be electric in either case – that’s the unanimous opinion of many. There are already a lot of promotional programs of the federal government and the vehicle construction industry prepares itself for this future scenario. Scientists are researching, developing and testing for all one’s worth.
When will the time come that everyone is driving electrically? At the moment nobody can tell with certainty. But it’s sure that it will come! Because electromobility is the future technology number one.

Company Pfaff Logistik and the environment

A lot of transport companies have to give thought to environmental management. A showcase company for this is the company Pfaff Logistik with head office in Baienfurt. Here environmental measures have always been taken successfully. Green logistics and modern energy management determine the corporate image. Big photovoltaics on the roof and the company-owned trucks driven by biodiesel are just two examples.
