Tips for Worry-Free Winter Driving

ID: 1475030

Driving in adverse conditions is all a part of being a courier. Find out how to drive safely during winter and be prepared with these tips.

(firmenpresse) - Even a hardened and experienced courier will have concerns over driving in winter. The weather can be harsh and hazardous during this time of the year, so extra care must be taken any time that you are on the road. Visibility can be very poor and roads can become slippery, even without snow and ice. Winter weather conditions can be a driver’s worst nightmare and it seems to bring the entire country to a standstill.

If you have concerns over winter driving and want to ensure that you are fully prepared (either for work or regular driving), these are my top tips for mastering the roads regardless of the weather.

Be Prepared

It is obvious, but this is for good reason. Being prepared before setting off can help to minimise the chance of encountering an issue on the road, as well as get back up and running again if you do have a problem. This involves carrying a winter kit in the vehicle at all times. The kit should include:

•First aid kit
•Phone charger (your phone should be fully charged before leaving)
•De-icer and scraper
•Torch (and spare batteries)
•Jump-start cables
•A blanket/extra warm clothing
•Food and water
•Tow rope
•Shovel
•Wellington boots

Being prepared also involves checking the weather forecast and planning your journey to avoid hazardous areas.

Driving in Adverse Conditions

As a courier, it is crucial that you know how to drive safely in adverse conditions.

Rain – We are all used to a little rain, but when it starts really coming down it is important to stay well back from the vehicle in front as it can take twice as long to stop. If you do lose grip and “aquaplane”, do not slam on the brakes, but instead take your foot off the accelerator and slow down.

Fog – Always drive slowly and use dipped headlights so that other vehicles can see you. When visibility is severely reduced, use your fog lights but switch them off when conditions improve. Keep your distance from vehicles and avoid sudden increases in speed.

Snow and Ice – Drive slowly, allow plenty of extra time for braking and use dipped headlights when it is snowing. Avoid any sudden movements and always take corners very carefully, particularly if it is sheltered from the sun (black ice). To avoid wheel spin, use the highest gear that you can.

Look After Your Motor

It is also crucial that you minimise the chance of breaking down by looking after your vehicle. Before hitting the roads, you should have the vehicle fully serviced or check the following yourself:

•Battery
•Brakes
•Tyre condition
•Windscreen wipers
•Lights
•Fluids

You should also stock up on anti-freeze, windscreen wash, de-icer and a high-quality scraper before winter.

These tips should help any courier to manage the roads throughout the harsh winter months. Provided that you are prepared, your vehicle is in good condition and you drive with care, you should be able to drive with confidence and work throughout winter.
