In particular there are three words that stand for the professional processing of sea freight: Expertness, network, far-sightedness …

(firmenpresse) - Sea freight – what does that exactly mean? A common definition is: It describes a transport of goods and cargo – like amongst others raw materials and mineral resources – by ships on rivers, canals, lakes, seas and oceans.

Facts and figures about sea freight

About 80 percent of the global trade is currently forwarded by ship. Due to the globalization the amount of these shipments is growing worldwide. Goods are being more and more imported and exported. Furthermore facilities in foreign countries, such as branches of German companies in overseas, contribute to this growth.

In the year 2000 six billion loading tons had been shipped worldwide, currently it’s about ten billion. In the year 2014 about 301.7 million tons of sea freight had been handled in Germany alone.

For this purpose different modes of transport are used such as conventional shipments (break bulk), part and full charter as well as Ro/Ro and container traffic.

If there is a choice between the country and the sea route, a shipment is often chosen because of cost advantages.

Shipments in practice

In the seaports the land freight meets the ships. Here the goods are loaded from the trucks onto the ships – mostly by special handling constructions. In order to ensure an unobstructed admission rail tracks, big roads and conveying troughs lead to the ships. Furthermore extra-large container terminals are often a component of highly frequented ports. An impressive scene can be seen on site.

Furthermore each transport must be documented and approved properly. Export documents, transit documents, bills of lading and more are required before the goods are allowed to leave the harbor by ship.

Goods are often shipped as a partial load on liner services. But this isn’t available for any destination. That’s why skilled specialists are always needed for sea freight solutions.

Shipments with competence and an efficient network

Today’s forwarders must provide a wide expert knowledge, a well-positioned global agent network as well as a lot of experience.

An exemplary case for such a forwarder is the company Pfaff Logistik. It scores with comprehensive services. From the planning of the transport chain over the preparation of the required documents to the surveillance – Pfaff handles everything consistently and unobstructed.
