“Evaporative Emissions” in focus of current laws - AVL systems meet the latest standards
Neuss/Gaggenau 10/22/2015
The current legislation on exhaust gases puts limits not only on harmful substances in the exhaust gas from internal combustion engines, but also on hydrocarbons outgassing from vehicles. These hydrocarbons come mainly from the fuel in the tank and associated loops. The experts of AVL Emission Test Systems have developed legally compliant solutions for evaporative emission testing, now available as the AVL EVAP product line. These include AVL SHED, AVL CANLOAD and AVL FUELLOAD.
(firmenpresse) - AVL SHED systems are sealed housings for evaporative emission determination for housing the units under test (vehicles or tank systems) with environmental simulation, measurement technology as well as automation software for measuring the hydrocarbon emissions.
AVL CANLOAD is an automated system for conditioning the activated carbon filters in the engine. These catch the displaced fuel gases while refueling.
AVL FUELLOAD is a refueling system featuring precise temperature conditioning
Already at the end of the 1960s, California started imposing laws to limit exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines, mainly to address the smog pollution problem in the big cities during that era. Regulations for limiting evaporative emissions have existed in California since the 1970s. Since those times, with its Californian Air Resources Board (CARB), the state has remained true to its leading role for maintaining the world’s strictest exhaust laws. The American Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) now follows it throughout most of the US. Emission regulations are further being tightened. As of 2017, for example, limits for evaporative emissions will be further lowered still in the scope of the LEV III (Low-Emission Vehicle) regulations.
Centralized limits have existed in Europe since 1987, where Germany has held the leading role since the 1960s. Europe, too, will see further tightening as of 2017, when the EURO 6c comes into force. Asian countries, China in particular, have edged ever closer to the European and/or US legislation in recent years, especially due to high smog pollution in the big cities nowadays. Accordingly, there is still much future potential in these markets.
Engineers in research & development and certification of engines and vehicles are faced with the challenge of extremely accurately measuring, analyzing and, above all, reducing these emissions.
The AVL EVAP product line is used in the approval procedure for new vehicles (certification tests), in the development of vehicle components and in production control (COP). This allows the latest legislations such as EPA TIER 3 and Euro 6c to be met reliably.
The AVL EVAP products integrate seamlessly into AVL testbed automation and thus provide an optimal overall solution. The EVAP automation controls the environmental simulation for test runs, which can last for up to three days (e.g. EPA 3-day diurnal test), as well as the exhaust hydrocarbon measurement equipment and communicates with the testbed automation for integration into the entire process. At the end of testing, the calculated emission data are transmitted to the central testbed database.
Michael Scheytt, Product Manager at AVL: “The AVL EVAP solution has been in the AVL product portfolio for more than a decade. We have made steady advancements in the field of Evaporative Emission Testing. We have also looked ahead, and prepared ourselves some time ago for the tightening of the emissions legislation in this field, and accordingly optimized our EVAP product line. We are therefore ideally equipped for the new worldwide regulations and new types of engine and fuel.”
AVL ETS is currently witnessing a high demand for AVL EVAP products. Many OEMs and tank system manufacturers are employing these systems to ensure they can reliably cover the prescribed testing methods for certification of vehicles, including those using alternative fuels.
Konrad Hinterhofer, CEO of AVL Emission Test Systems: “The requirements resulting from further lowering of legal limits in the field of EVAP in the US and Europe have been successfully implemented in our product development. This has involved reducing error tolerances and increasing process reliability, and has demanded maximum care in the design of the entire system for precise gas analysis. AVL is the only supplier in this field with the necessary combined competence in relation to automation, exhaust measurement systems and systems engineering, with which the best possible complete solution for an exhaust gas laboratory can be achieved.”
The highlight is that AVL provides a full end-to-end product portfolio for the field of Evaporative Emission Testing that is fostered by a worldwide service and support organization.
In November, AVL experts will be at the Tank Tech in Munich. For details on this event see:
