Tradition meets innovation and creativity
ZOW Trend Report: Lidewij Edelkoort shows new design trends from London
[Bad Salzuflen, November 14, 2014] The London Design Festival is regarded as an international melting pot of creative designers: Staged for the twelfth time, designers at the event provided visitors with an insight into their latest collections and developments by means of exhibitions, installations, demonstrations and workshops. ZOW trend scout Lidewij Edelkoort was also on board: In her latest trend report she illustrates which shapes and colours will be setting the tone for the coming season - in many cases, the furniture designers in the British metropolis have been combining traditional elements with innovative machining techniques. "Shapes and styles of days gone by thus take on a modern look", explains Edelkoort. At the same time, the trends presented by her in the reports on the major trade shows in Milan, New York and Paris have been confirmed: The so-called "upcycling" process was also present in London, whereby recycled materials are taken and converted into new products.
(firmenpresse) - The "Louis Ghost" chair created by Philippe Starck clearly showed how designers like to fall back on historic principles of design and combine them with new materials. In many cases, these principles were also based on traditional trends with regard to the furniture presented in London. Shapes used in period furniture were thus experiencing a comeback: In doing so, the materials had, for instance, been modelled, upholstered or had even been encased in resin. "Completely new ways of combining old and established objects with new, ingenious ideas were demonstrated at the show. The furniture is evocative of spirits from a bygone era, now appearing in a new guise", describes Edelkoort.
Design between function and art
At the Contemporary Furniture Fair New York it was already apparent that sustainability also plays a key role in furniture design. In London, however, the creative individuals also built a bridge to art in terms of upcycling: Recycled materials were resplendent in a multitude of colour combinations. The use of such colours adds an artistic touch to even the simplest pieces of furniture", explains the trend expert. The result: Recycled plastic or wood veneers are bathed in colour harmonies which also contribute accordingly to the upgrading and finish of the materials used. The combinations of colour appear across large areas as well as in a finely structured manner." In this way, the consumer is also artistically involved: Due to the boundless multifacetedness of the colour palette, the composition of the individual pieces of furniture and accessories bears comparison to an exhibition in which the customer becomes the curator," states the trend expert.
As though draped
Moreover, the London Design Festival demonstrated that the "draping" of constructive elements such as frames is a focal point of the designers'' work: The surface materials are attached extensively on, in and around the supports. Coverings such as leather, fabric as well as upholstered cushions fill out the frames made from wood, plastic or metal, resulting in the creation of rounded projections and curves. "In this way, a playful interaction comes about between the gentle lateral surfaces and static supports geared towards practicability", stresses Edelkoort. "With this trend, the item of furniture no longer has the effect of being "a whole" but creates the impression of a joint venture in which both parts pool their strengths."
In the forthcoming and final Trend Report, Lidewij Edelkoort will be providing an account of the Dutch Design Week (DDW) in Eindhoven. The information and impressions gathered will be used as a basis to derive projections for the future, which will be presented on some 2,000 square metres of exhibition space "ZOW trend_works" during the International Exhibition for Suppliers to the Furniture and Interior Design Industries in February next year. As a result thereof, exhibitors, designers as well as trade visitors will have the opportunity to find out about groundbreaking trends in the furniture industry and will be provided with a platform at ZOW in Bad Salzuflen on which to exchange their ideas and experiences.
