MediaNews Group Founder Dean Singleton Announces Retirement

(firmenpresse) - DENVER, CO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/04/13 -- , Inc announced today that its founder and chairman, William Dean Singleton, 62, will retire prior to the Company's annual meeting to be held in December. He will continue as non-executive chairman of .

Mac Tully, president and CEO of The Denver Post, will become its publisher. Singleton, with the late Richard B. Scudder, founded the company in 1984 and built it to become the nation's second largest newspaper company as measured by daily circulation. Scudder died in 2012 at the age of 99.

"It is time for me to begin working on my bucket list," said Singleton. "It has been an honor to assemble and lead the newspaper industry's finest group of professionals."

He continued, "My long-time friend John Paton has begun a transformation of MediaNews into an exciting digital news company. I retire confident of its future under John's dynamic leadership."

Singleton began his newspaper career at the age of 15 as a part-time reporter in his hometown of Graham, Texas, and bought his first newspaper at age 21. He served on the board of the Newspaper Association of America from 1993 until 2004, and was Chairman of NAA in 2002 and 2003. He was Chairman of the Associated Press Board of Directors from 2007 until 2012. In addition, he is on the boards of the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center, The Helen G. Bonfils Foundation and The Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

He has served on the boards of the National Sports Center for the Disabled, the Winter Park Recreational Association and the University of Denver.
