Dr. Gregory F. Bell, DDS Encourages Parents to Instill Positive Oral Hygiene Values in Their Children at an Early Age

According to the article, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents to take their children to the dentist for the first time before they reach one year of age; however, going as close to that first birthday as possible, even waiting until after it has passed, is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bell, who has worked with numerous families over the course of his long career, recommends talking to the family dentist before making the appointment in order to get their advice. Regardless of when a child goes in for their first examination, though, Dr. Bell encourages families to start educating children about proper dental hygiene habits as early as possible. Additionally, he recommends that parents consider the ways in which the foods and beverages that they serve to their kids will impact their oral health.
"Great dental health starts in childhood," asserts Dr. Gregory F. Bell, DDS. "Many well meaning parents may be providing bottled water for their children, but this water lacks fluoride. Because fluoride is an important part of dental health and development, this trend may cause a new generation of children to suffer from tooth decay that could have been prevented by the drinking of fluoridated tap water. I see in my practice an increased number of missing teeth in adult patients who grew up before fluoride was added to tap water."
Dr. Bell understands that it can be quite difficult to determine when it is time to take a child into the dentist for their inaugural examination, but he asserts that, by keeping the lines of communication open with the family dental provider, parents can best see to the needs of their kids.
