Dr. William Boothe: PRK Dry Eye Risk Not Lower Than That Associated With LASIK Procedures
Generally, Ophthalmologists Have Recommended PRK Procedures Over LASIK Procedures to Individuals Who Have Dry Eyes to Prevent Aggravation of the Condition; Dr. William Boothe Reacts to News That Both of These Procedures Offer Similar Risk
(firmenpresse) - PLANO, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 09/10/12 -- The medical community often has several different procedures that can be used to treat one condition. These varying options are generally recommended depending upon their side effects and the medical history of the patient. One example of this is the recommendation of photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, over LASIK. It was previously thought that PRK presented less risk of dry eye post-procedure than LASIK; however, Reuters that a new study indicates that these procedures are equal in their risk of dry eye. Dr. William Boothe, a leader in the LASIK field, believes that this discovery may change the way ophthalmologists determine which procedure to perform.
According to the article, the study found that patients who underwent PRK and LASIK reported "similar ratings to their post-op eye dryness regardless of the procedure. And in either case, the symptoms went away within a year." Dr. Edward E. Manche, who teaches ophthalmology at the Stanford University School of Medicine in California, corroborates these findings with his own experience. In addition to creating a dry eye sensation, Dr. Manche has found that these procedures both often result in patients feeling as though they have something stuck in their eye.
believes that this announcement will increase the number of LASIK procedures that are recommended. The article highlights the fact that LASIK offers a wide range of benefits, including faster recovery time and less pain. Although the side effects of both of these procedures reportedly resolve themselves over the course of the year following the operation, Dr. Boothe encourages the use of LASIK because of the fact that his patients both heal and experience improved vision faster.
"LASIK is an integral part of the ophthalmic industry," Dr. Boothe explains. "The benefits of this procedure are many, and I am ecstatic to be able to provide this procedure to my patients. People are busy and don't have time to wait for their vision to improve or their eyes to heal. LASIK allows my patients to recover quickly and get back to their lives as soon as possible."
