The musical is a stage remake of the 1992 Disney film, which was a box office flop but later gained a cult following. Based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899, the plot follows a group of newsboys (known as "newsies") who rebel against New York City's newspaper publishers by refusing to work.
The initial fall 2011 tryout at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey earned strong reviews, and the limited run of the current Broadway production has already been extended based on advance ticket sales. The show is now running through August 19, with the possibility of further extensions or an open run if the show continues to do well.
