The Bedford Report Provides Equity Research on United Continental & Delta Airlines

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- The Major Airlines sector has been fighting to contain losses from higher fuel costs and fewer passengers as the global economy stagnates. Airlines have been looking to bag checking, job cutting and reservation change fees to help slow down the losses, which has been somewhat successful across the sector. The Bedford Report examines investing opportunities in the Major Airlines Industry and provides equity research on United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) and Delta Airlines Inc. (NYSE: DAL). Major Airlines are also facing potential profit headwinds courtesy of the US Government and the EU. In the US, the government is trying to impose requirements to make fee information easier to find and understand for fliers. The US airlines are currently trying to persuade the government to delay deadlines for these requirements.

Meanwhile, the EU plans to charge Major Airlines for carbon emissions, warning it would cost the industry 17.5 billion euros ($23.8 billion) over eight years. Several US and Canada-based airlines and airlines associations had sued the EU for its plan to include them in the emissions trading scheme as of next year. Under that plan, all airlines would have to have costly emissions permits for flights to and from EU airports. Among several complaints, the airlines had argued that the EU lacked the jurisdiction to require permits for emissions produced during the entire flight, or even stretches that cross the air space of non-EU countries, the Associate Press Reports.

Delta Air Lines serves more than 160 million customers each year, and was named by Fortune magazine as the most admired airline worldwide in its 2011 World's Most Admired Companies airline industry list. US Airways and Delta Airlines plan to swap a large number of slots at New York and Washington airports hit a snag on Tuesday with U.S. antitrust officials raising questions about the deal's impact on competition. Under the plan, Delta would get 132 slot pairs -- the right to operate one takeoff and one landing -- at LaGuardia from US Airways; and US Airways would get 42 slot pairs at Reagan National from Delta as well as rights to operate additional daily service to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015.

Last week United Airlines announced that Boeing completed the final assembly of the airline's first 787 Dreamliner, finishing the first major step in the aircraft's production. United will be the first North American carrier to take a 787 delivery, with plans to introduce the first of 50 Dreamliners into revenue service in 2012.
