J.P. Morgan Clings to Top Spot on Institutional Investor's All-America Research Team
Barclays, BofA Merrill Tie for Second Place in Closest Contest in Nearly a Decade; Deutsche Bank, Jefferies Enjoy Strong Gains

Morgan leads the All-America Research Team, Institutional Investor's annual ranking of the country's best sell-side research analysts -- but just barely. Only one position separates the firm from the two that tie for second place, Barclays Capital and BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research.

The last time the firms in first and second place were separated by only one team position was in 2002, when Lehman Brothers edged past Citi to begin its eight-year run at the top of the ranking; Lehman's U.S. equity research operations have since been acquired by BarCap.
"In a period of unprecedented economic uncertainty, from sovereign debt crises in Europe and political unrest in the Middle East to gridlock in Washington, it's not surprising that investors would flock to banks with global platforms to find out quite literally what in the world is going on," notes Thomas W. Johnson, II's research editor. "The competition is fierce."
Despite finishing at or near the top of this year's ranking, J.P. Morgan, BarCap and BofA all experienced a net loss of team positions. Deutsche Bank Securities enjoyed the biggest gains, picking up seven positions, for a total of 25; the firm moves up one notch to eighth place. Jefferies & Co. added six positions, for a total of seven -- enough to vault that firm from No. 18 to No. 12.
Survey results reflect the opinions of more than 3,500 buy-side analysts and portfolio managers at over 1,000 institutions that manage some $10.7 trillion in U.S. equities, or roughly 80 percent of the $12.7 trillion market capitalization of the MSCI U.S. index at the time of polling.
