animago AWARD 2009 goes Babelsberg

ID: 1001680

Most important European animation award for 2009 will be awarded in Potsdam-Babelsberg / Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg will sponsor the animago competition

Munich, 30.06.2009 – The most important award within the European animation industry is moving to Babelsberg: as hosts of the 13th animago AWARD ceremony, the fx.-Center will become the centre for the international animation and postproduction industry. “An award like the animago AWARD belongs to a media location like Babelsberg,” explains animago project leader Mattias J. Lange. The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is also in agreement and is sponsoring the animago AWARD as well as the two-day training event animago CONFERENCE with a generous sum.

(firmenpresse) - Films like Ratatouille, virtual worlds like Second Life, video games like World of Warcraft as well as commercials would be impossible without animation. The animation and postproduction industry is the strongest growing branch in the multimedia world, Lange thinks, who is not only the project leader but also the editor-in-chief of DIGITAL PRODUCTION. Postproduction is as important as production in the film industry. “Digital content creation plays and increasingly important role in web and mobile applications as well as in gaming. Before, artists were considered only technical pioneers, now with this competence they’ve become an economic force.” continues Lange.

The increasing influence of this young industry has also been confirmed by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg’s location sponsorship. The Medienboard’s CEO Petra Müller comments, “Berlin-Brandenburg is the location for contents. We are exited that the most important European competition on the topic of digital content creation – the animago AWARD – is coming to Berlin. The creatives from similar industries like filmmaking, gaming, Web 2.0, visual effects, design and technology are already here. Now the collective know-how can benefit from synergies.” The local scene is participating in the concept creation via the specialist dealer Lichtbild 4d. The founder of the successful Meet & Greet festival is also intensively involved in the two-day animago CONFERENCE programme planning.

More than 10,000 entries from animation for film, TV commercials through short films and industry productions to ambitious home productions contributed to the 13th animago AWARD’s international clout. Already for 2009 over 350 registrations from more than 30 countries have been received. To ensure that as many artists as possible participate, the submission deadline for the animago AWARD has been extended to 31 July. Participation is open to anyone and is free of charge.
“The animago artists who have earned recognition are creative, technically and artistically on the highest level. animago AWARD and animago CONFERENCE will ensure this recognition – even with people that are not familiar with this genre.” states Mattias J. Lange. The best of the best are selected not only by a jury, but in some of the 11 categories will be selected by the readers of different communities like FotoCommunity.de, Hobnox and MacNews. The festive awards ceremony will take place during the animago gala on the evening of the first day of the conference.

The animago CONFERENCE is offering an attractive programme with over 20 national and international speakers. Workshops and master classes, where experts will demonstrate the application of new software, are also on the programme. The demonstration of the modern capturing method from Germany is planned. Motion capture is a technique that makes it possible to map human movement and transform it into a computer-compatible format. This enables movement to be analysed and translated into computer-generated 3D models.

The organisers have also put a special emphasis on the up-and-coming young artists. This year, for the first time the winner of the category Best Young Artist Production will be awarded €3,000. “For young talent it is important to make yourself noticed. This is what animago, more than ever before, would like to do – the talent will be introduced to the community, a broader audience and potential employers. But,” emphasises project leader Lange, “only if they’re good enough.”

The animago AWARD 2009 will be awarded in 11 categories. Till 31.07.2009 projects for the following categories can still be submitted:

Best Advertising Production

Best Mobile Production

Best Interactive Production

Best Game Design

Best Short Film
