Delphi can help you see "inside" your products
Delphi Introduces Computer Tomograph Technology and Capabilities at Stuttgart Automotive Testing Expo Show.
Delphi To Display in Hall 1 #1190 at Automotive Testing Expo Europe 2009 - June 16-18, 2009 - Stuttgart
(firmenpresse) - Stuttgart, Germany – Computer Tomographs (CT) are presently standard equipment in the field of medical technology, and until now those used industrial applications could only examine the surface of materials. Delphi Corp. is the first in the automotive industry to look deep inside components with newly developed computer tomographs. The results are exciting possibilities for quality assurance, reverse engineering, and reduced development times.
A deep look inside reveals details without destruction
The same technology that has transformed medical examinations for humans is also applicable for examining components. Using computer tomography, which is based on X-ray technology, Delphi is able to examine the structural properties of components through non-destructive means. This new technology digitalises components with the aid of X-ray technology and compares them with the original CAD data records and then performs an on-screen analysis of their quality and tolerances. The findings obtained by this process can help improve product quality, functionality and development times. In physical terms, both digital radiography and computer tomography are based on X-rays. The difference between these two methods is the ability to see the third dimension. Conventional radiography produces two-dimensional X-ray photos, similar to results shared with patients during visits to the doctor. Alternatively, computer tomography records the object under examination in two dimensions from many viewing angles, and then links the data to a three-dimensional display. This makes Delphi’s CT an outstanding tool to visually analyze structures revealing hidden moving components.
Test has successfully proved the accuracy of the Computer Tomograph
Delphi offers extensive experience in applying the CT technology and special analysing software to customers in the automotive and non-automotive sector. Computer tomograph has garnered industry attention and has been acknowledged as an effective and reliable measuring instrument, particularly for measuring tasks in the field of joining technology (dimensions and materials).
Areas of application for computer tomography
Computer tomography is used primarily for the structural analysis of components in molded parts. In applications such as a switch, a series of X-rays can map its function so that the observer can view a motion sequence to verify the correct mounting of small springs which trigger the switch. This analysis enables molds or the injection process to be optimised rapidly and at an early stage. The second area of application is digital linear measurement. From the three-
dimensional scattering of the X-rays, special software generates data records with the exact dimensions of the objects under examination. In several steps, the corresponding CAD data records from the design are then superimposed over the above data. Each measured detail of the component is compared with the CAD model as a numerical value. The greater the difference in measurement, the more intensely the software visualises this determined deviation by means of a colour scale.
The graduated colours of this three-dimensional target-actual comparison enable the observer to immediately recognise the degree to which the real component matches the intended design. Previously, the component would have been dismantled into individual pieces and measured manually. With complicated parts, this procedure could take up to several weeks. Furthermore, Delphi’s process allows the data model to be rotated as desired in real time, and sections can be cut and analysed in any plane.
In the future, the process can be completed in a few days instead of several weeks. In addition, the examined components are not modified or damaged and remain available for further analysis.
