World record holder comes home to his world record mountain for a new record attempt in Oberaudorf
Flühr tests out the conditions at Hocheck ahead of the record attempt in January.
(firmenpresse) - In 2004 and 2005 German ski-racer Christian Flühr completed two endurance skiing world records at the Hocheck near Oberaudorf, 75 km from Munich. On 13th and 14th January 2009, the Hocheck will be the stage for Christian’s next unbelievable ski world record-attempt. A circle will then be closed. At Hocheck and at the mountain Unterberghorn in Kössen, just a few kilometres away on the Austrian side of the border, Christian Flühr will race 55.555 m downhill in just 24 hours. This will beat the current world-record by around 7000 m. Since this weekend Christian has been training hard at Hocheck to prepare himself for this amazing feat.
The world record attempt “55.555” is a completely new challenge for Christian. This record does not yet belong to the German extreme-athlete. “This will be a completely new challenge, but I am ready to face it. The ski-resorts of Hocheck and Hoch-Kössen are premier league partners for this attempt.” says Flühr. The “altitude-rush”, so called by Christian’s team captain Sabrina Hoever from the Netherlands, is divided into two parts: The start will be at Unterberghorn in Kössen on 13 January 2009 at 9am. Afterwards Flühr will ski an altitude of 860m using the cable-car at Unterberghorn, to achieve as many metres as possible during day light hours. After moving to Oberaudorf, Christian will race at Hocheck during the night. Using the quad-chair “Hocheckexpress” the extreme skier will complete the second part of the challenge. At Hocheck there are only around 300 m altitude per run, but the slopes will be perfectly lit. By 9am on 14th January, the ski-racer hopes to have reached his goal to set a new world record. The current record of 49.680m was achieved by an Austrian skier some years ago.
The planning for the record attempt is still going on. “We want to support Christian as well as we can. Our lifts will operate at maximum speed during the record. We have also produced lots of artificial snow to prepare a perfect slope that Christian can ski down at maximum speed in January. The world-record-attempt is a product of many different hands working together and we are proud that Christian is making his attempt in our resorts.” says Hannes Rechenauer, Business Manager of Hocheck-lifts, After working with Christian on his two world record attempts in 2004 and 2005, he really knows what he is talking about.
Since 12th December 2008 the lifts have been operating in the biggest night-skiing area of Germany and also in Kössen for two weeks. “Perfect snow, best conditions- I’m so happy that it’s winter again! The wonderful powder snow is sure to help me in January but I still have to train a lot for it.” Says Christian after his first runs on the Hockeck.
