dpa launches editorial team on migration
(ots) - Ten years after millions of refugees came to Germany as a result of the Syrian civil war, attitudes toward migration have hardened in the country and throughout Europe. At the same time, migratory causes such as conflict, climate change and economic hardship are not letting up. In countries such as Germany meanwhile, the demand for skilled immigrants is increasing. Against this backdrop, the German Press Agency (dpa) is launching a new, internationally oriented migration team on September 1, to shed more light on this global phenomenon.
Responsibility for the migration team lies with Helen Maguire, managing editor of the English-language international service based in Berlin, and Mokhtar Gmati, head of the Global Arabic News Service based in Cairo and Tunis. Editorial oversight will be provided by Flora Bell, English service editor in Berlin, and Tarek Guizani, correspondent for the Arabic service in Tunis.
"Migration is a key issue of our time, and its importance will continue to grow, including in our customers reporting," says dpa Editor-in-Chief Sven Gösmann. "As a leading international news agency with a global presence and German, Arabic, and English editorial offices, dpa is well positioned to offer a global perspective."
The migration team will draw on the expertise of dpa s worldwide network of correspondents. A central aim is to provide greater journalistic coverage of the causes of migration and of migration routes. This will complement the predominantly European perspectives that currently characterize dpa s German and English-language coverage especially.
Multimedia reports and features will be published in English, German and Arabic to serve dpa s customers in Germany and worldwide.
