Population growth increases demand for copper and potash
(PresseBox) - Demand for copper has been rising steadily for a good 20 years. Fertilizer is also in high demand.
Copper will probably not run out, but it could become more expensive. Demand for the current year is estimated at 27.9 million tons. In 2024, it was still 27.2 million tons of copper. The metal is valued for its good electricity and heat conduction properties, in the electrical industry and in modern technologies. The automotive, construction and renewable energy sectors rely on the industrial metal. The largest copper reserves are found in Australia, Chile, Peru and Russia. From 2000 to 2022, 396 million tons of copper were mined. The reserves in the ground increased at the same time, as technological advances in the mining sector are also leading to more reserves. Copper is also a metal for which recycling plays an important role, with virtually no loss of performance. The price of copper has not been moving much recently. But sideways movements can suddenly lead to a price increase if there is a trigger. Customs risks and a still uncertain economic recovery in China are still causing the copper price to fluctuate.
In any case, the supply of copper is rather scarce due to the constantly increasing demand. Added to this are new industrial products and increasing population growth. While around 7.55 billion people lived in the world in 2017, this figure will rise to around ten billion by 2030. And a population of around 11.20 billion is forecast for the end of the century. This will also increase the demand for raw materials and, in particular, for sufficient food. Potash is in demand here as an essential fertilizer to increase yields and strengthen plant health.
