There is still a long way to go to recover resources in space and bring them back to earth. But rocket launches by private initiators are giving the industry a new boost. For example, there are already companies that want to make progress with satellites, specially developed space robots and the development of software and telescopes. Asteroids often contain iron, nickel or platinum group metals, which are important for the automotive and electronics industries. These are mainly found in large quantities in South Africa, Canada and Russia.

NASA would like to study the asteroid Psyche from around mid 2029. It is around 226 kilometers in diameter and mainly contains nickel and iron. Other smaller asteroids are said to contain gold as well as platinum group metals. Missions into space are of course extremely expensive and some mining methods still need to be developed. Many problems are still unresolved, be it the energy required for mining in space, the water requirements, the necessary safety precautions or the logistics as a whole.
It is good that there are still resources on earth. There are still deposits that lie at greater depths and have yet to be discovered. Technologies that can penetrate deeper into the earth s crust are still needed.
