Valuable gold and silver coins are found again and again. Today, precious metals delight investors.
(PresseBox) - During the restoration of a Gothic church in Saxony-Anhalt, 818 gold and silver coins were found. The treasure was hidden in the leg of a statue, it dates back to the 17th century and was probably brought there during the Thirty Years War. Back then, the church served as a safe haven for wealth, and even today gold and silver are recognized as safe havens. By the standards of the time, the value of the hidden treasure was much higher than what a miner could have earned in a year. Gold and silver coins from Roman times are also being unearthed time and again, as was recently the case in the Netherlands. They date back to the first century AD. Of the total of 400 coins, 115 were made of gold and others of silver.
Gold and silver are therefore everlasting, as is their value. Silver coins were once unearthed in a field in Poland that had lain dormant for around 1,200 years. They were minted in the Carolingian Empire and were probably once part of a historical ransom. Archaeologists believe that Paris was to be saved from a Viking invasion. This is because the coins probably came from the Viking trading town of Truso. And in the eighth century, Norse invaders often attacked areas of the Carolingian Empire. There are many treasures that are still missing. But one thing is clear: for investors and central banks alike, gold and silver are a tried and tested vehicle for preserving value and providing security. The price of the precious metal is now approaching the magical 3,000 US dollar mark. Investments in precious metals and gold mining companies certainly belong in a well-mixed portfolio.
