Nuclear power generation is on the rise worldwide. The use of nuclear energy is also being investigated in the space sector

Rolls-Royce has been in discussions with the aerospace industry regarding microreactor technology for some time. One of the company s main businesses is the provision and maintenance of engines and reactors used in nuclear submarines. By the early 2030s, there should be a reactor used in a space program. Rolls-Royce has already received various grants from the UK Space Agency. The aim is to develop key technologies that are suitable for space, for example for lunar missions. Because what space exploration needs is large amounts of energy. To travel to Mars, for example, a conventional rocket would need around seven months. A rocket with thermal nuclear propulsion could significantly reduce this time. Supplying energy on the moon or Mars with reactors would also be a great idea.

The amount of electricity required on earth is growing and climate targets cannot be achieved without nuclear power, at least for the foreseeable future. The costs of energy generation also play a role. According to calculations, the German energy transition, i.e. the nuclear phase-out, cost a total of 696 billion euros between 2002 and 2022. Maintaining and expanding the power plants would have been less than half as expensive. Climate protection and energy supply security are the reasons why many countries are increasingly relying on nuclear energy. Uranium is increasingly needed for this.
