Wind, solar and nuclear energy are becoming more and more common. Researchers have now tested diamonds.
(PresseBox) - Experts from the British Atomic Energy Authority and the University of Bristol have produced a nuclear diamond battery. This consists of artificial diamonds and carbon 14. Unfortunately, the electricity produced is only weak. Perhaps at some point in the future, special applications, such as glacier monitoring, could benefit from it. This is because the service life of this diamond battery is as long as the half-life of the carbon isotope, namely almost 6,000 years. This means that it will still supply half as much electricity as it did at the beginning. Sustainable, climate-friendly energy must therefore be generated by wind, solar and nuclear power plants. The uranium required for nuclear power is sometimes produced during the extraction of copper, silver, gold or vanadium.
Half of the uranium mined today is extracted by in-situ leaching (uranium is dissolved from the rock using liquids), with a further 46 percent coming from underground and surface mining. For safety reasons, remote-controlled equipment is often used, and employees are equipped with suits and respiratory protection. All uranium mines are supervised by the authorities, and many are certified or in the process of certification. At the forefront are the uranium companies in the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, Canada. Around 60 junior mining companies are now responsible for the extremely high-grade uranium there, compared to just 34 in 2023.
