(PresseBox) - The rare and extremely valuable Brutus gold coins were minted after Caesar s assassination. The crime was committed with 23 stab wounds, hence the famous phrase "You too, Brutus?", supposedly the emperor s last sentence. Brutus was one of the assassins. The coins are dated to the year 43 or 42 BC. The assassins had paid their soldiers with the coins they had minted themselves. A civil war had broken out between those involved and their allies after Caesar s death. After about a year, the assassins lost the war. Brutus then took his own life. One of the reasons why Brutus gold coins are so rare is that only six dies were used. The Brutus gold coin is a so-called golden aureus, which roughly corresponded to a soldier s monthly salary.
Coin treasures, often dating back to Roman times, are always to be found. For example, 1368 Roman coins were recently found in Worcestershire during building work. They dated from the time of Emperor Nero. There are also far more valuable gold finds, measured in euros rather than historical value. In Hunan, China, researchers have discovered gold worth around 80 billion euros. A good 40 gold veins containing more than 300 tons of gold were found on the site of a mine. This was at a depth of around 2,000 meters, with even more gold suspected underneath. Sometimes, as has happened in California, homeowners find treasure in their garden. In California in 2013, these were old gold coins with a value of ten million US dollars.
