Nuclear heat sources superior to any other technology
Finnish researchers have compared the life cycle of pure heating reactors with other technologies.
(PresseBox) - Nuclear heat sources for urban district heating networks are the most environmentally friendly. The Finns have considered the entire life cycle, from uranium mining, construction and operation of the reactor to the disposal of radioactive waste. District heating networks in cities like Helsinki, which have cold winters, consume a lot of energy. In Helsinki, the district heating network supplies around 93 percent of all buildings with heat. A small modular reactor could be installed in between. If a district heating network is powered purely by nuclear energy, the environmental balance is better compared to heat pumps, electric heating and conventional fuels (coal, natural gas, peat, wood). Work is underway to develop a small, safe and underground modular heating reactor for existing district heating networks.
Many countries have recognized that nuclear energy makes an important contribution to having clean electricity systems. The UK is one such country. According to the National Energy System Operator in the UK, this cannot be achieved without nuclear energy by 2030 and beyond. New generations of nuclear power plants and lifetime extensions are needed. And the country is by no means alone in this opinion. The USA and various other countries want to triple their nuclear power capacity by 2050. This will require new reactors and the revival of decommissioned power plants - and uranium, of course. The desire for more clean and reliable energy and lower CO2 emissions will increase the demand for uranium worldwide.
