In 1859, gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains near present-day Denver, Colorado, then in Idaho in 1862. Not all prospectors became rich, but gold discoveries contributed to settlements, promoted the development of new territories and states and played a major role in westward expansion. Gold also had a positive impact on the growth of the American economy.
