The future of hydrogen - with raw materials such as platinum and copper

ID: 710628

Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly energy source and a possibility for a low-emission future.

(PresseBox) - In Oberhausen, a French gas producer has already commissioned a plant for climate-neutral hydrogen production with a capacity of 20 megawatts. Research is being carried out into the hydrogen economy to ensure security of supply and drive forward the energy transition. In East Frisia, a test storage facility ("cavern") at a depth of 1,700 meters will soon be put into operation by the nationalized energy company Uniper. This is because hydrogen requires large storage capacities. CO2-neutral electricity (generated by wind or solar energy) will be used as an energy source, especially for industry.

If the test phase of the cavern in East Frisia is successful, it will be enlarged and will supply an estimated capacity of 250 gigawatt hours of energy. The electrolysis of hydrogen with water and electricity requires considerable quantities of platinum. The expansion of electrolysis plants for hydrogen production therefore increases the demand for platinum.

A major producer of platinum metals, including gold, is Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ . The company is active in the USA and South Africa and is also increasingly focusing on battery metals.

Another important raw material for the energy transition is copper. The reddish metal can be found in electric cars, solar and wind power plants, hydroelectric power plants and the geothermal sector. And these environmentally friendly sectors consume significantly more copper than conventional methods. Many analysts therefore expect a copper deficit in the future.

Good prospects for Mogotes Metals - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/mogotes-metals-inc/ -, for example. Its Filo Sur copper-gold-silver project, located on the border between Chile and Argentina, is situated in a promising area and has successful neighbors.
