Nuclear energy as a growing component in the energy mix
More and more countries are turning to nuclear power to meet net-zero commitments
(PresseBox) - SMRs (small modular reactors) will be an essential part of the energy transition. The goal of achieving a CO2-neutral economy by 2050 can only be achieved with a significant increase in the use of nuclear energy. Although most new capacity will be created in the form of large, water-cooled reactors, SMRs could play an increasing role in reducing emissions. The mini reactors can be manufactured in a factory and then transported. The amount of energy produced is of course less than that of large reactors. However, SMRs offer some significant advantages. With their smaller size, they can provide energy in many locations, even in remote places. Construction times and costs are lower, as are CO2 emissions, and they score points for increased safety. SMRs could, for example, be a suitable means for new end users such as data centers to cover the large demand for electricity.
SMRs are being built in Argentina, Russia and China, some of which have been in operation since 2019. Estonia, Poland and Jordan, for example, also want to rely on mini reactors. In total, around 30 new countries are currently building or considering building their first nuclear power plant. More countries will follow. In July 2024, China was planning 41 nuclear power plants, which are due to go into operation within the next 15 years. The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) will hold the first international conference on small modular reactors in Vienna in October 2024. As the number of nuclear power plants, whether small or large, will continue to rise, the demand for uranium will also increase, as can be seen from the price trend. A promising future for companies such as IsoEnergy and Premier American Uranium.
