New mobility needs raw materials
(PresseBox) - The world is in a state of upheaval when it comes to car mobility. The transformation will succeed with the necessary raw materials.
Automation and electrification are changing our relationship with driving. Automated driving will take a little longer, but it will come. The automation of assistance systems is certainly increasing. Electromobility is becoming more and more advanced, for example, ranges are constantly increasing and charging times are also becoming shorter. The fuel cell is and will remain an issue, although the breakthrough will also come with large and heavy vehicles. For politicians, plug-in hybrid technology has been relegated to the sidelines. This is a shame, because anyone who gets to know and appreciate this type of transportation will probably find it easier to switch to a purely electric vehicle.
Lithium-ion batteries are the linchpin of electromobility. Lithium is the most important ingredient in the necessary raw materials. The lithium comes from China, Australia or South America. Around eight kilograms of lithium must be used for a 50-kilowatt-hour battery. Cobalt and nickel are also essential raw materials for electric car batteries, without these two raw materials it is not (yet) possible. Cobalt is problematic simply because the Congo supplies around 70 percent and does not necessarily boast good working conditions. Copper, which is used as a raw material for cables, has fewer negative facts. The importance of electromobility can also be seen from the fact that the transport sector is responsible for around 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe.
