Climate change needs rare earths

(PresseBox) - For the path to a future without fossil fuels, rare earths are one of the modern technologies.

"Rare earths" is actually just an abbreviation for "rare earth metals," but it has become that way. Rare earths ensure greater efficiency in electric motors, wind turbines, light bulbs, magnets and smartphones. Mining these metals is usually not without problems, as it is costly and a hazard to water bodies. There is no alternative to these metals. There can be up to three kilograms in an electric car. Almost half of the rare earths produced come from China, how could it be otherwise? That immediately sets off all the warning lights about dependency.

Estimates suggest that the demand for rare earths alone for electric traction motors will be around 20 times higher by 2040 than in 2018. Traction motors are found in diesel locomotives, escalators, electric cars or washing machines. These types of motors generate power in the form of torque as soon as the motor receives electrical power. An internal combustion engine, on the other hand, produces most of its traction power in the mid to upper speed range. There could be global supply shortages of rare earths as early as 2030.

In the EU, demand is expected to peak around 2040. If recycling can be increased, this would benefit self-sufficiency. According to research, the number of mining projects to extract the necessary metals is lagging behind the global energy transition. One of the rare earths, for example, is neodymium.

Green Shift Commodities - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/green-shift-commodities-ltd/ - owns rare earths such as neodymium in addition to nickel, phosphates and uranium in its Berlin project in Colombia. In Argentina, the Rio Negro lithium project is also part of the portfolio.

US Critical Metals - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/us-critical-metals-corp/ - has rare earth projects in Montana and Idaho. In addition, there is a uranium, a cobalt and a lithium project.
