The Nile Valley is the birthplace of the earliest societies, kingdoms and civilizations. The Mali Empire was particularly famous; its ruler was King Musa I and it was the richest of the West African empires. It existed from about 1235 to 1645. Gold production and trade took an important place. Almost half of the gold that traveled to Asia, Africa and Europe came from there alone during the heyday of the empire. Besides, the city of Timbuktu in the Mali Empire was one of the most outstanding scholar cities in history. The king Mansa I was indescribably rich, he is said to have been the richest person who ever lived.
Before colonization, decentralized and non-tyrannical systems of government prevailed in Africa. Post-colonial Africa was different, with various dictatorial regimes. 35 of Africa s 54 countries had military dictatorships. Today, Western ideas have spread to Africa and most African dictators no longer exist. However, there are also governments that call themselves democratic but rely on oppression and authority. So, the Mali Empire used to be the largest gold producer in the world, gold was also used as currency.

Gold is produced at the Blanket mine, in which local investors have a stake, ensuring acceptance. The last quarter brought in production of nearly 20,100 ounces of gold, up 20 percent from the same quarter last year.
