Echelon Joins the Business Council on Climate Change
Business Partnership Takes Action to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions
(firmenpresse) - (SAN JOSE, CA – May 2007) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), a leading provider of networking technology that is used to manage and reduce energy consumption, today announced it has joined the Business Council on Climate Change (BC3), a partnership of San Francisco Bay Area businesses committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing corporate environmental leadership. Echelon joins a growing number of environmentally conscious companies dedicated to taking action to address global climate change, while maintaining a competitive bottom line. Other members of the BC3 include Gap, Inc., Google, and PG&E.
“More efficient use of energy is the most environmentally responsible action one can take today to help reduce the impact on the environment. Echelon is proud to provide products to our customers worldwide that make it easy to implement energy savings programs such as demand response, time-of-use pricing and in-home energy controls, without affecting comfort,” says Bea Yormark, Echelon’s president and COO. “We are excited to work with other members of the BC3 in developing innovative approaches to doing business that also respond to the serious threat of climate change.”
The BC3, a collaborative partnership with the Bay Area Council, the San Francisco Department of the Environment and the United Nations Global Compact, is poised to make the San Francisco Bay Area a model of commercial climate stewardship by inspiring leadership on the pressing issue of climate change, and giving business leaders the tools to reduce their GHG emissions. The BC3 recognizes that the business community has the power to significantly impact climate change, and it functions as an avenue for communication between companies that have stepped up to the plate to address this challenge. The BC3 seeks to inspire others to do the same, and to build a business movement for climate stewardship.
Echelon’s technology is used worldwide to help reduce energy consumption in buildings, homes and factories, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The company's technology can help businesses save upwards of 30% on energy consumption, resulting in millions of dollars of savings and contributing to a greener environment. Echelon also provides smart metering systems for global utilities.
In addition to helping others reduce consumption, Echelon is committed to reducing its climate own footprint. Recently, Echelon won an energy award from the California Energy Commission for its headquarters building which showed a 30% energy savings in a demand response program offered by PG&E. The study measured the potential energy savings that could be achieved through voluntary reduction in energy use by corporations in response to energy pricing signals from utilities.
"The drive to join the Council displays a mounting awareness of our impact on the world,” explains Andrew Michael, vice president of Sustainable Development for Bay Area Council, “What we primarily need to convey is that protection of the environment can coincide with protection of your market.”
The BC3 is built around five “Principles on Climate Leadership” which relate to the areas of: Internal Implementation, Community Leadership, Advocacy & Dialogue, Collective Action, and Transparency & Disclosure. These principles are founded on the belief that private business can shift practices to realize economic growth while maintaining environmental sustainability.
“The addition of new members gives us a great opportunity to redefine how business is conducted in the Bay Area,” says Jared Blumenfeld, Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment, “and to show that we can surpass the status quo.”
