Tax Free Shopping goes digital in Austria
With its cloud service, eValidation Austria will guide Austrian customs into the digital future.
Customs clearance of tax-free exports of tourists will be done electronically.
The Austrian startup is proud to be the first company to have received the technical approval of the Federal Ministry of Finance for launching its digital platform in Austria. Around three million exports will be processed only digitally and thus faster in future.
Austria thereby is improving its position in the international competition for shopping spending by tourists, who are already touching the one-billion-euro mark.
eValidation Austria will be launching its service in Austria in 2017 and expanding its service to another four European countries in early 2018.
(firmenpresse) - So far, the Tax Free purchases were processed with paper forms and ink stamps by Austrian customs. The extremely positive tourism development of recent years has brought the capacity for customs clearance to their performance limits and led to long waiting periods when leaving Austria.
Whether Swiss customers in Vorarlberg, Russian guests in ski resorts or Asian tourists on their Europe-in-ten-days tour: In 2017, the arrivals of these tourists increased by more than 20% in the first half of the year compared to 2016. Tax Free Shopping is therefore playing an increasingly important role in Austria as a tourist destination and in its trading landscape.
Up to now, the service of VAT refund could only be carried out with high administrative efforts for tourists, merchants and authorities.
Gerd Gfrerer, Managing Director for Sales and Operations eValidation Austria explains: "With our system, we significantly increase the speed of handling Tax Free validation. Effort in the shops is reduced and queues at the exit belong to the past. In the future, tourists will be able to access all necessary information via his mobile phone and have more options to choose. "
With its cloud platform, eValidation Austria is pursuing the goal of completely digitizing the entire Tax-Free process, thereby simplifying access to this service for tourists and merchants.
This aligns with Europe-wide eGovernment initiatives and allows the development of new services and business models that were not possible so far.
The analysis of digitally available information will also change the methods of risk management to minimize fraud risk fundamentally.
Atahan Tepe, MD Business Development and Mastermind behind the platform, said: "Some European countries using the traditional Tax-Free System have recently seen a massive increase in fraud cases. Our platform is able to assess the risk potential of every single Tax-Free transaction. Discussions about the use of the digital eValidation platform in some of these countries are well advanced and in some cases already completed. "
Behind the young startup in Vienna are five founders, who bring more than 50 years of international experience in Tax-Free shopping into the company. They have been working on future projects in the past, but had to realize that a complete digitization in the old structures of established Tax-Free service providers will not be possible in the foreseeable future.
A completely new platform has now been developed with a Vienna-based development team. From the beginning, the focus has been on international deployment, scalability and flexibility. With the use of the new technology, Tax Free Shopping will change dramatically, as it does not require any adjustments to the POS-systems of merchants or existing tax-free suppliers.
