Reliable pneumatic drives from Aventics lower life-cycle costs and improve safety of railway vehicles

(firmenpresse) - With its new pneumatic modules, Aventics facilitates the work of railway vehicle engineers: The RTC-TD pneumatic door drives offer an exceptionally long service life coupled with low maintenance and help to significantly reduce the lifecycle costs of trains. In addition, the compact pneumatic modules allow easy opening in case of emergency.

The new RTC-TD door drives offers adjustment of the closing speed, pneumatic cushioning, and safe exhaust. The product''s system components consist of the proven standard pneumatic modules from Aventics. The pneumatics specialists integrated a cartridge solution for the valves into the end covers of the rodless cylinder. Applied in railway brake systems, these are particularly sturdy and vibration resistant, since, unlike valves mounted on profiles, no pipes and pipe connections can come apart. With the exception of the open/close control, all pneumatic functions are integrated via the valves. This makes the rodless drive of the RTC-TD series more compact and lighter than electromechanical and other pneumatic solutions.

Pneumatic cushioning anchored in the hardware

Compared to competitive products, during the opening and closing of doors the RTC-TD already cushions the movement 80 mm before reaching the end position. This is made possible by its special design. The early braking is easy on the mechanics and reduces the risk of passenger or luggage becoming trapped.

The structure of pneumatic drives is less complex than that of electromechanical drives. As it contains less components, there is less risk of a parts failure. A two-stage throttle with fixed throttle cross-sections brakes the movement without electronics and mechanical wear parts. During development, Aventics adjusts the drive module to the specific requirements of the door manufacturer. The one-time adjustment facilitates assembly and commissioning of the door drives by the train manufacturer. Even if the door mechanics are worn, the controlled movement remains maintenance-free across the entire service life, as the door speed is controlled by fluid mechanics.

Easy manual opening

Doors equipped with RTC-TD can be quickly and easily opened manually in case of emergency. In case of power loss and actuation of the emergency opening valve, the exhaust valve opens automatically and the pressure inside the rodless cylinder drops to the level of the ambient atmosphere. As opposed to electromechanical solutions, passengers do not have to additionally overcome the forces of the mechanics. Instead, the remaining air escapes directly. As a result, the force required for the RTC-TD is much less than for other pneumatic solutions.

Service life: approximately 30 to 40 years.

Maintenance and repair of the units are uncomplicated as they consist of a limited number of standard components. After replacement, the maintenance technicians do not have to adjust the speed settings or cushioning. Depending on the air quality, the service life is approximately 30 to 40 years. The RTC-TD reliably reaches the minimum door drive service life of 2 million kilometers operational performance required in Germany. The RTC-BV drives with a similar design have been proven to last at least 5 million kilometers. This is equivalent to well around 2.5 million cycles without adjustment. The assembly is designed for the typical railway application temperature range of -40°C to +60°C and complies with the applicable standards for vibration and impact resistance as well as fire protection.

Aventics will present the RTC-TD at the Innotrans trade fair in Berlin from September 20 to 23, 2016. The pneumatics specialists can be found in hall 10, stand 310.
