(businesspress24) - Lloret de Mar is a popular seaside town located in Spain’s Catalonia region, with beautiful beaches, fabulous restaurants and a thriving nightlife. What you see today, however, rests on thousands of years of rich history, and is evident in a number of historical landmarks and museums scattered throughout the area. If you are a history buff, you are not going to want to miss these points of interest during your next visit to Lloret de Mar.

Can Saragossa Museum

The Can Saragossa Museum of Iberian Archaeology was once one of the oldest farmhouses in Lloret de Mar and is a good place to explore Iberian history. The building has seen significant changes over the years, including a complete refurbishment in the 19th century into a luxury summer home, followed by a transformation into a hotel in 1954.

Today it houses the permanent exhibitions of Iberian archaeology, including a collection of coins, pots and other artifacts, as well as the extensive Joan Llaverias collection. It also serves as the headquarters of the Uniti of Cultural Heritage of Lloret de Mar Town Council.

Turó Rodó Settlement

The Turó Rodó settlement dates back to the 3rd century and is located on a peninsula on one side of the Plaja Castle, with beautiful views overlooking the coast as well as inland. Even today, the layout of this small settlement’s dwellings and workshops can be seen among the ruins.

Montbarbat Settlement

The larger Montbarbat settlement is located further inland and is believed to have been established after the Turó Rodó. This settlement is surrounded by walls and towers that once provided protection to inhabitants.

Some streets have been uncovered, along with dwellings and food storehouses dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries B.C. Fragments of imported Attic ceramics have also been found, indicating a Greek presence or influence.

Puig de Castellet Settlement

The Puig de Castellet settlement dates back to the 3rd century B.C. and is located two kilometres from Lloret de Mar, with views stretching from the River Tordera to the coast that would have proved advantageous for keeping watch. It is a small site of just six homes and was once protected by a large wall and defence towers.

Sant Joan Castle

The Sant Joan Castle, built in the early 11th century, is located high up on a hilltop, in between the beaches of Lloret de Mar and Fenals Beach. Between wars, natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, the Sant Joan Castle has taken a beating throughout the centuries. For example, in the early 19th century the Battle of Trafalgar left the tower destroyed, and a particularly brutal storm in the early 20th century left the castle in ruins.

Today, the only part of the castle that is intact is the tower, which was restored and is now filled with information about the town and the castle’s history. Visitors can climb to the top to enjoy stunning views that stretch across town and along the coastline.
