Raising Awareness, Celebrating Successes

(firmenpresse) - KITCHENER, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/27/16 -- Sanguen Health Centre will be commemorating World Hepatitis Day on July 27, 2016 in Kitchener. This annual awareness-raising event celebrates the strides that have been made in the treatment of hepatitis C. This year, Sanguen is thrilled to officially debut the Community Health Van, an initiative funded in part by Green Shield Canada, that improves access to health and social services for marginalized people throughout Waterloo region.

On July 27, 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sanguen Health Centre will be at Carl Zehr Square (City Hall) at 200 King Street West, Kitchener. This free event includes live music, face painting, sidewalk chalk art, food, and much more. The Sanguen Community Health Van will be on site with staff available to answer questions about this groundbreaking outreach program that has had more than 2,000 visits from community members in the first six months on the road!

Dr. Chris Steingart, Sanguen Health Centre''s founder and Executive Director, said, "World Hepatitis Day is an opportunity for people in our community to learn more about hepatitis C. Each year, we welcome the opportunity to share information and to join people in showing support for those living with this virus. I am thrilled that the Sanguen Community Health Van will be part of this year''s event at City Hall - this project has had such a warm reception from people across Waterloo region and we are excited to expand our services further in the coming months."

It is estimated that more than 250,000 people in Canada are living with hepatitis C, and approximately 44% of them are unaware of their status. Symptoms may not show up for decades despite significant liver damage occurring - untreated, hepatitis C can be fatal. Sanguen Health Centre offers the opportunity for people to learn more about the virus, their own risks of contracting it, and the options that are available for treatment.

Sanguen Health Centre is a not-for-profit, community-based agency that was founded in 2008 by Dr. Chris Steingart to focus on the prevention and treatment of the Hepatitis C virus. In the years that followed, the agency has expanded significantly to include outreach, education, support services, and specialized nursing services. The Community Health Van allows Sanguen to provide hepatitis C-related services, and other additional health and social services, anywhere in Waterloo region.
