EnergySolutions Achieves Major Milestone at Zion Decommissioning Project Removing Last Large Components
(firmenpresse) - SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwired) -- 03/29/16 -- EnergySolutions'' subsidiary, ZionSolutions announced today that it has successfully completed the removal of the last of the large components from the Zion Nuclear Power Station and prepared them for shipment and final disposition. This marks a major milestone in decommissioning one of the United States'' largest nuclear facilities.
This is the first time in the history of the nuclear power industry that two nuclear units have been safely dismantled at the same time. This critical step in the decommissioning process was achieved following the highest industry standards for worker industrial and radiation safety with no impact on the environment.
"This is a major milestone in the decommissioning of the Zion Nuclear Power Station and we are extremely proud of our employees for the safe and efficient job they have done in removing the large components from the plant," said Ken Robuck, President EnergySolutions. "In safely completing this portion of the project more than 98% of all the radioactive source term of the Zion plant has now been removed from the plant and safely disposed of or placed into dry storage on site, a major accomplishment for this project."
This achievement follows a series of successful accomplishments at Zion including establishment of world records in completion of the largest and most successful spent fuel transfer project and segmentation/removal of both reactors. In safely achieving these accomplishments the project remains on budget and two years ahead of schedule.
Large components include steam generators, pressurizer''s, piping components, reactor coolant pump and motors.
