A New Monument Will Pay Tribute to the 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup

The unveiling of the monument is planned for 2017, during the 150th anniversary of Confederation and the centennial of the National Hockey League

David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South), announced $2.15 million in funding from the Government of Canada''s for the creation of the Lord Stanley''s Gift Monument.

Mr. McGuinty made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. He was joined by Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa; George Hunter, Vice-President and Chairman of the Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Inc.; and representatives of the Ottawa Senators hockey team and the National Hockey League. The monument will contribute to an increased knowledge and awareness of the importance of Lord Stanley''s gift to our country''s sport heritage. The original Stanley Cup was displayed for the occasion.
