Taj Mahal and Superwhite: neither marble nor granite
Rocks are often identified as marble or granite, actually, there are several rock types with extraordinary quality and different physical characteristics such as …. the quartzite.
(firmenpresse) - In daily life, we are used to classifying rocks and tomb stones in two main categories: marble and granite. This is particularly the case when using these products commercially, just as material differences don’t come up due to drowsiness or habit. Nature offers us indeed a wide range of rocks which totally differ in characteristics and qualities from marble or granite.
A special material is Super White, a whitish - grey quartzite, which reminds us a bit of an ice plate. At first sight, it could be classified as a marble, but Super White has only the colour in common with marble, since quartzite derives from sandstone and is converted through strong heating and high pressure. The physical structure that emerges after the metamorphosis resembles the structure of pebble stone.
As for hardness and resistance against chemicals, the material’s structure really differs from that of marble.
Another example for a wrong classified rock is the quartzite Taj Mahal, which comes from Brazil and has a light pigmentation like the marble Calacatta. By contrast, this quartzite is not as prone to scratches or corrosion as marble and it’s for this reason that architects and interior designer prefer to use this material for kitchen tops and vanity tops.
