Curcumin Has The Potential To Help Sufferers Of Radiation-Caused Skin Reactions

(firmenpresse) - Orlando, FL– March 4, 2016 – For thousands of years, turmeric has been believed to offer a range of health benefits. Many researchers and scientists believe that most of the spice’s therapeutic benefits come from its powerful healing phytochemical called curcumin. Curcumin is also thought to aid in reducing the side effects caused by certain types of treatments.

Curcumin has the potential to help sufferers of radiation-caused skin reactions. Breast cancer patients who undergo radiation therapy often suffer from certain side effects, especially those that affect the skin. The skin problem is characterized by the appearance of blistered, peeling, and red skin.

According to research, 95 percent of breast cancer patients suffer from this side effect, which is known as radiation dermatitis. This skin reaction typically affects the underarms, chest, or neck.

In a pilot study featured in the recent issue of the Radiation Research, it was found that curcumin could potentially protect patients from the skin issue. The participants with breast cancer were divided into two groups.

The thirty participants suffered from non-inflammatory breast cancer. They received radiation therapy without chemotherapy. They were 90 percent Caucasian with an average age of 58.1 years. While the first group was given 6 grams of curcumin on a daily basis, the placebo received capsules with dicalcium phosphate and yellow food coloring.

After the study, it was found that only 29 percent of the 14 participants who received 6 grams of curcumin treatment every day suffered from peeling, blistered, and peeling skin. In the supplement-free group, there were 88 percent out of 16 women who suffer from the side effect.

“Curcumin contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Curcumin has been widely studied due to the myriad of health benefits it could potentially offer. However, despite of its therapeutic properties, it has imperfections. Curcumin is low bioavailable, which means it can stay in the GI tract without even reaching the bloodstream.

Being low-bioavailable, curcumin’s nutrients and therapeutic ingredients are not efficiently delivered inside the human body. This is why experts are thinking about the possibility of making curcumin an ingredient for topical creams and ointments.

The good news is that individuals who undergo radiation therapy may use curcumin supplements, but they need to ensure that they choose the right product. There are curcumin supplements available in the market nowadays that contain BioPerine.

BioPerine is a black pepper extract that has bioavailability-enhancing properties. It is believed to be effective in increasing curcumin absorption inside the body (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
