Cedar Falls Dentist Reveals Treatment Options for TMJ Disorder
Dr. Thomas Strub Offers Patients a Variety of Treatment Options for TMJ Disorder, a Common Condition That Can Result in a Number of Debilitating Symptoms
(firmenpresse) - CEDAR FALLS, IA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/18/16 -- According to cosmetic dentist Thomas Strub, DDS, the are not always known. "Damage to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that prevents the jaw from operating normally and comfortably is referred to as , or TMD," says Dr. Strub. In some cases, this damage may be the result of impact or trauma; in others, damage may occur due to an inflammation or imbalance of the joints or the cartilage surrounding them. When the muscles or bones of the jaw are displaced, or when the teeth do not fit together properly, individuals can experience discomfort or pain. Additionally, Dr. Strub notes that grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw can exacerbate this condition.
Dr. Strub highlights that while some patients visit his office specifically for TMD treatment, most patients simply report experiencing the without realizing the cause of their suffering. When his patients complain of discomfort such as popping, clicking, or locking of the jaw, the can test for signs of TMD. However, Dr. Strub says that the symptoms of TMD can extend far beyond jaw pain. Headache, earache, facial pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and neck or shoulder pain can all result from a problem with the temporomandibular joint. "Depending upon their severity, these symptoms can significantly impact your quality of life," says Dr. Strub. "Prompt treatment of TMD can prevent these symptoms from worsening and restore comfortable, normal function to your jaw."
TMD treatments can range from changes in diet to physical therapy. For many patients, the use of a bite guard worn during sleep can significantly reduce the symptoms of TMD. Certain medications have also proven effective for some patients. According to Dr. Strub, finding the best TMD treatment begins with a comprehensive examination of the temporomandibular joint and the surrounding muscles. This examination, combined with an inspection of the jaw''s range of motion, the occlusion of the teeth, signs for grinding or clenching of the teeth, and facial soreness or swelling, can help Dr. Strub determine the nature of the patient''s particular case and recommend the appropriate treatment method.
