Taking a in an article on the Adorama Learning Center, industry expert Mason Resnick says, "Less than a week before one of the most popular events in professional sports, Canon has unveiled the second generation of its most advanced action photography pro camera, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. With a maximum of 14fps standard/16fps Live View burst rate and up to 170 RAW images per blast when using a Cfast card, as well as improved AF performance and 4K video capture, the full-frame Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is destined to be the camera of choice for sports photographers, wildlife photographers, and even for studio photography."

The EOS-1D X Mark II boasts a full-frame 35mm 20MP sensor, bumped up from the original 18MP CMOS. Canon has also added one stop of expanded sensitivity, allowing photographers to push the ISO all the way to 409,600. Improving the camera''s low-light performance and improved noise reduction in shadows is gapless micro lenses in the sensor. It is also Canon''s first full-frame sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which will improve high-speed focusing precision during Live View when shooting stills or movies.

The camera''s new Digic 6+ processor gives it a major performance boost, which is especially true when working with the fast write speeds found in CFast 2.0 format-compatible Compact Flash cards. The camera records up to 14fps full-resolution RAW or JPEG images when shooting with the viewfinder and using the mirror mechanism, going up to 16fps when shooting in Live View mode.

The viewfinder on the EOS-1D X Mark II now has several "heads-up" superimposed displays on the optical image, as well as a new touch-capacitor screen. These include active AF point displays, an electronic level, shooting mode and metering mode indicators; exposure levels and settings are displayed in the black border surrounding the image. The 3.2-inch touch-panel TFT LCD monitor has 1.62 million dot resolution and an anti-reflective surface. Photographers can change the AF point in live view with the touch of a finger, and image magnification during Live View video and stills is possible.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II can capture up to 4K video at up to 60fps. It is the first EOS to capture full HD video at 120fps, offering the ability to capture high-resolution slow-motion action. An 8.8MP still image can be grabbed from the 4K video to review and check things like focus and exposure, or simply to get a production still.
