Nutrition Website Claims Consuming More Plant Proteins Leads to Better Health
Nutrition website EatGurus.com claims eating plant-based proteins is better for overall human health than sourcing proteins the body needs from meat sources.
(firmenpresse) - Popular Nutrition Website EatGurus.com Weighs in on the Age-Long Animal vs. Plant Protein Debate
Augusta, GA (February 1, 2015) €“ For decades, all manner of people, from casual gourmets and physicians to fitness enthusiasts and food purveyors, have gone back and forth on whether animal protein or plant protein is best for human consumption. The battle has gone ugly on quite a few occasions, especially when groups such as vegans, vegetarians and paleo eaters are involved. Now, popular website EatGurus.com has its say: plant protein is best, while animal protein is okay in very careful moderation.
"Meat isn''t the only source of protein that is effective when building muscle," says Amanda Kelley, spokesperson for EatGurus.com. "Neither is plant protein inferior simply because it doesn''t come from animals. Part of the problem we have here that few experts acknowledge is black-and-white thinking."
To illustrate the point, EatGurus.com posted a meme asking readers whether they think gorillas are malnourished. The gorilla is an animal known for its magnificent muscular build and strength, yet it eats a vegetarian diet of green plants, fruit and vegetation.
"If gorillas get all the protein they need to thrive from plants and have such a high percentage of muscle, what makes humans think they need to get most of their protein intake from meat sources?" Kelley states. "We believe it''s time for the myth to be set straight."
The website also mentions the result of a Chinese study, where participants were asked to replace the animal-based proteins in their diet with plant-based protein. The results of the study show that plant proteins prevent and can even reverse degenerative diseases. The study also suggests that plant proteins are significantly different from animal proteins from a nutritional standpoint and are more beneficial when eaten by humans and animals. Aside from being easier to digest, plant-based proteins contain more fiber, essential minerals and antioxidants without the saturated fat and cholesterol present in many forms of animal protein.
This is not to say that meat-eaters are supposed to stop getting their proteins from animal sources altogether and become vegans or vegetarians. Kelley says, "Fortunately, we don''t have to go through such extremes. If a person likes noshing on pork, beef, poultry, fish and other meat sources, they should just keep their fill in moderation and choose their meats carefully. Eating a home-cooked burger or steak made with quality meat that''s free of hormones and antibiotics once a week is much better for the body than eating a burger made from meat that hasn''t been raised responsibly."
According to Kelley, the EatGurus.com team believes the key to better health and nutrition is to be mindful of what one eats and to ingest as much beneficial plant protein as possible.
"By mixing in plenty of greens, whole fruits, vegetables and legumes with a few servings of good quality meat per week, meat eaters should be just fine," says Kelley.
