New Studies Reveal Turmeric’s Antioxidant Properties Could Be Beneficial For Parkinson’s Disease

(firmenpresse) - Orlando, FL– January, 2016 – Parkinson’s disease typically affects individuals over the age of 60. However, in the past years, more and more younger people are starting to suffer from it. While there are available treatments for the condition such as medications, recent research finds a spice potentially helpful for the condition.

New studies reveal that turmeric’s antioxidant properties could be beneficial for Parkinson’s disease. This condition affects the nerve cells, which produce dopamine. This neurotransmitter chemical works by sending signals to various parts of the brain.

When the coordination of the muscle movements is impaired, it also affects body movements. This can result in the development of symptoms such as muscle rigidity, tremors, loss of balance, and changes in walking pattern or posture. It can also result in the increased risk of falls and changes in speech and handwriting.

Turmeric is a medicinal spice that has long been used to remedy a range of medical conditions. It contains a phytochemical called curcumin, which is popularized by its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

The medications used for the condition are believed to cause motor complications. They are also thought to be unhelpful on a long-term basis. Unfortunately, they also do not prevent other symptoms of the condition such as tremors, postural instability, and cognitive defects.

In a study, the researchers used fruit flies to determine the effects of large doses of turmeric on dementia. It was found that dementia caused by Parkinson’s was blocked among the flies that received the curcumin treatment. More studies are still underway but the previous research has offered hope that the spice could potentially prevent or even treat Parkinson’s.

According to researchers, Parkinson’s cells often experience mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage. This could potentially be caused by irregularly excessive accumulation of aS (a-synuclein) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Studies reveal that curcumin could potentially prevent the accumulation of aS, which triggers the development of Parkinson’s.

In another study, it was found that rats treated with curcumin had protection against oxidative stress and cell death. It was believed that the neuroprotective effects were caused by the antioxidant capabilities of curcumin.

Curcumin is not just popularized by the therapeutic properties it contains, but because it has low bioavailability. The good news is that there are curcumin supplements available nowadays that contain a bioavailability enhancing ingredient such as BioPerine. BioPerine, which is a black pepper extract, is believed to help increase curcumin absorption inside the body (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
