Ongoing Shortage of Medicine in Iraq Prompts Canadian Philanthropist to Send Essential Medicine to Those in Need

ID: 1408150

(firmenpresse) - ONTARIO, CANADA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/11/16 -- A Canadian philanthropist together with Humpty Dumpty Institute is sending much needed pharmaceuticals in the hopes that it will assist in alleviating the ongoing shortage of medicine in Iraq.

According to the World Health Organization ("WHO") there are millions of people in Iraq currently in need of medical assistance or support, and the situation is only deteriorating. (World Health Organization, Situation Report Number 25 08 June - 28 June 2015)

The medicine is being donated by Stephen Arbib, CEO of MAG Logistics and son of Canadian philanthropist Walter Arbib, who is already well known for providing antiretroviral medications to people who are most in need.

"People are suffering every single day," said Stephen Arbib. "Organizations like WHO are doing a tremendous job of providing medicine, funding and vaccinations but there is always more that can be done given the major challenges Iraq is currently facing."

The Arbib family has most recently provided much needed medicine and equipment to countries such as Nepal, Somalia, Mozambique and Myanmar. This will mark their third philanthropic endeavor into Iraq and Kurdistan.

"The conflict in Iraq is creating significant challenges in terms of getting medicine to where it is needed most. While we would like to help every community, we selected The Kobani community, in Kurdistan, which has suffered greatly at the hands of ISIS."

Ralph Cwerman, President of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, added "We are so proud to be involved with Stephen and Walter Arbib''s initiative to provide urgently needed medicines to countries around the world. This is a huge and extremely valuable humanitarian effort and is directly improving the health of thousands of people."

Closures of supply routes, high conflict areas, medical supply shortages and staff shortages are among the other pressing challenges facing Iraq and all culminate in a severe health crisis.

"We should all be extremely concerned with the fact that large numbers of people are deprived of the medical assistance that they need. This delivery of medicine is one small step but much more support is needed if we are to try and change the course for the health sector in Iraq," said Arbib.

The pharmaceuticals will treat a range of conditions and illnesses and include several classes of antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and Ciprofloxacin.

The value of the medical shipment is estimated to be $250,000 USD.
