Research Reveals Elevated Cancer Rate in WTC Responders Parker Waichman Comments
A study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine has found an excessive cancer incidence among World Trade Center (WTC) responders.

Researchers looked at three cohorts that were followed in three longitudinal studies of cancer incidence among World Trade Center (WTC) responders, and analyzed the findings and methodological differences. The authors found that €œSeparate analyses of these cohorts revealed excess cancer incidence in responders for all cancers combined and for cancers of the thyroid and prostate.€Â
The authors concluded that, €œThe presence of three cohorts strengthens the effort of identifying and quantifying the cancer risk; the heterogeneity in design might increase sensitivity to the identification of cancers potentially associated with exposure. The presence and magnitude of an increased cancer risk remains to be fully elucidated. Continued long-term follow up with minimal longitudinal dropout is crucial to achieve this goal.€Â
Parker Waichman comments that exposure to toxic dust at Ground Zero has been linked to numerous health conditions. €œResearch continues to show that 9/11 responders suffer from serious illnesses as a result of their service,€ said Matthew J. McCauley, Senior Litigation Counsel at the firm. €œThese findings further confirm the need for Zadroga Act benefits, which provide medical treatment, monitoring, and compensation to 9/11 responders and survivors.€Â
The firm has stood alongside responders, survivors and, advocates fighting to renew the Zadroga Act. Congress recently voted to reauthorize the Act, extending benefits to sick responders. The WTC Health Program, which provides medical treatment and monitoring, has been renewed until 2090 and the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) has been reopened for another five years.
