Statement by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada on M.M. v. United States of America

Today, the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, issued the following statement on M.M. v. United States of America :
"I have decided to reconsider this case in light of the considerable passage of time since the initial Ministerial decision, and the appearance of what may be new facts that were not put before the Minister at the time of his decision. I believe it would be prudent to provide both parties with an opportunity to update the record for my reconsideration.
I want to acknowledge that this is a complex case -- one that is clearly very difficult for the parties involved.
In making this decision, I want to assure all parties that I do not take our obligations lightly, and I will be guided by those obligations, and by the Supreme Court of Canada''s decision in this case. The government of Canada takes its international extradition obligations seriously, and is concerned about the allegations made.
I will be guided by the thoughtful analysis of the Supreme Court of Canada and it''s clarification of the law on extradition in this case."
