The Board of Governors of Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCU-WHS) is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of the Honourable Wayne G. Wouters, PC, as founding Chancellor of the University.
Starting with the Government of Saskatchewan in 1977, Mr. Wouters completed a most distinguished 37 year public service career in 2014 when he retired from his position as Clerk of the Privy Council of Canada which includes the roles of Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service.
PCU-WHS was created via private legislation and the unanimous support of every Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia.
The University''s physical construction was made possible through funding support of not only the Government of Canada but also a broad cross section of provincial governments, employers, unions, and providers from across Canada and internationally, in addition to a generous 3.5 acre land donation by the City of Port Alberni.
"We are very pleased to welcome Wayne Wouters, a highly experienced and accomplished national and international leader to the University. He brings a wealth of practical knowledge, strategic vision and successful project execution to this valued position," said Wolfgang Zimmermann, President of PCU-WHS. "Installation of the founding Chancellor completes the initial University establishment process and we are confident that his long-term commitment towards better socio-economic outcomes for workers, employers and our society at large will play a key role in building the University as a critical knowledge generator in all aspects of Workplace Health."
"This new role represents a unique opportunity at this stage of my life to assist in the further development of a rare Canadian endeavour which has so far succeeded in uniting a broad cross section of not only all workplace stakeholders but all levels of government," said Wouters. "At a time when many Canadians with disabilities continue to face major inequities, employers struggle with accommodation challenges and every year around 1,000 Canadian workers die from industrial accidents and diseases. The potential for PCU-WHS to contribute in mitigating these outcomes is very substantial, and I look forward to assist in maximizing its long-term potential."
The cost of disability-related absence in Canada has reached $16.6 billion, or an estimated 2.4% of the gross national payroll, in 2012.
PCU-WHS''s unique statutory mandate focuses exclusively on all areas of workplace health, namely occupational health and safety, health promotion, return-to-work, disability management and all aspects of rehabilitation.
