Cross Lake Community Calls for Inquiry Into Health Services After Recent Community Death
(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/11/15 -- The Family of the late Tyson McKay and the Cross Lake Indigenous community are seeking compensation for the wrongful death of Tyson McKay, raising the issue of the substandard health care services delivery and infrastructure in Cross Lake, Manitoba and calling for a full inquiry into the genocide upon the people of the Cross Lake and Indigenous peoples in Canada.
"The Family of Tyson McKay and the Cross community are being discriminated against for the failure of governments in Canada, particularly the Governments of Canada and Manitoba, to provide appropriate health care service delivery and infrastructure to Cross Lake, as compared to non-aboriginal communities in Canada and Manitoba," says Chief Cathy Merrick.
"This is the equivalent of systematic assisted suicide", says Councilor Donnie McKay. "The nursing station is effectively a Tylenol clinic".
"We do not want Tyson to be just another statistic but rather have him be the catalyst that brings forth awareness and in fixing the many flaws our health care system has in northern Manitoba and across Canada", says Kelvin McKay, brother of the late Tyson McKay.
On June 25, 2015 of this year the late Tyson McKay, a 32-year-old member of the Cross Lake community, passed away from a heart attack. Tyson had attended to the local Health Canada operated nursing station complaining of chest pain on June 23, 2015, but he was only provided with antacid and Tylenol after a 12 minute visit and no follow up. The result is the tragic loss of life of a young man in Cross Lake. Before more residents of Cross Lake are further at risk, action is urgently required to provide adequate health services infrastructure and services. The lawyers for the Family and the Cross Lake community are considering options for legal action.
"We are calling upon all levels of government for a full inquiry in order to improve health services in Cross Lake and for all Indigenous peoples, to address the failure of Canada and Manitoba to provide services on par with other Canadians," says Dr. Sydney Garrioch, of Cross Lake, Manitoba and the family of the late Tyson McKay.
