MES launches the Modeling Guidelines Interest Group: A specialist forum for modeling professionals in which to discuss guidelines and exchange ideas about developing safety-critical software.
(firmenpresse) - Berlin, 30 November 2015: Model Engineering Solutions (MES) has created a new forum for modeling experts: the Modeling Guidelines Interest Group (MGIGroup). The purpose of the group is to establish a forum in which to discuss the challenges of implementing modeling guidelines, particularly in safety-critical software applications. A first online meeting has already taken place with participants from AVL, Daimler, Ford, GM, Samsung, Siemens, Schaeffler and WABCO.
Confronting challenges in modeling
Modeling software in accordance with current safety standards such as ISO 26262 (automotive) or DO 331 (aviation) requires state-of-the-art modeling techniques. When using the Simulink modeling language for generating software, guidelines such as MAAB, MISRA Simulink/Stateflow or tool-specific modeling requirements such as dSPACE TargetLink or MathWorks High Integrity Guidelines must be followed. Frequently modelers also have to take company-specific additions into account. For modelers, this can often mean having to respect up to 500 modeling guidelines at one time. However safety standards do not provide clear instructions on which guidelines to select and apply from the various guideline documents. Another difficulty is that documents are in part redundant or can even contain guidelines that contradict each other. Exchange of best practices, modeling patterns for safety-critical software, the need for new guidelines, possible updates to older guidelines and ways of eliminating sources of error in tools in the tool chain are just some of the topics that the MES MGIGroup will address.

MES has extensive experience in managing model-based development projects and has helped numerous companies move from code-based to model-based development. The use of modeling guidelines and industry best practices is always a key issue here.

As initiator, MES moderates the group’s discussions and organizes regular online meetings.
