"When you want to replace a body part... it''s very, very complex because it''s not a homogenous structure," says Montemagno. "With 4D manufacturing I can put in molecules that trigger different pieces of the structure so that when it''s interfaced with the body, ultimately you end up with a material that has the same basic properties as you started with."
